On Being Right...
On Being Right...
Davy Crockett’s famous quote. It reminds us of particular disciples from Acts 17:10-12.
He may never have lived up to it, but many of his accomplishments are good things for us to ponder. The pioneer generations of Americans are a great example of having to do difficult things in tough times where you have to figure it out on your own. Some of this was bad, some of it was good.
Acts 17:10–12 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.
The Berean Jews were willing to go to the lengths of checking the Scriptures to make sure that what they were told was accurate. This action did not require any miracles, but the simple, humble pursuit of knowledge concerning what God has revealed.
Our God is a god of truth, a god of “rightness”. We as his People must be a people who know and do right. Isaiah 34:16-17
Isaiah 34:16–17 “Search from the book of the Lord, and read: Not one of these shall fail; Not one shall lack her mate. For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them. He has cast the lot for them, And His hand has divided it among them with a measuring line. They shall possess it forever; From generation to generation they shall dwell in it.”
Being “right” is a very dangerous place these days. The only way to be sure we are RIGHT is to know WHAT is right. God is the only One who can help us in that effort.
Once we know the truth, we have to act upon it. “Then Go Ahead!” It’s up to us to put the truth into action.

In some people’s minds, being “right” is prideful, egotistical.
In our cynicism, we assume that those who know they’re right could never possibly be right. Jn. 18:37-38
John 18:37–38 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.”
A clear, decisive statement from Jesus concerning his purpose and his mission.
Pilate, whether by scoffing dismissal or by uneasiness, responds by questioning whether truth is even something to concern oneself with.
For the sake of our study, let’s assume that “being right” means that we are right in the way that Jesus was right.
As disciples, we are inherently concerned for the truth. Jesus’ mission is our own mission. Ps. 86:11
Psalm 86:11 Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name.
Knowing that truth, it is up to us to communicate the witness Jesus bears of that truth. 1 Tim. 2:3-4
1 Timothy 2:3–4 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Being “right” involves a willingness to know what is right. Jn. 7:16-18
John 7:16–18 Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.
Some people are convinced they are “right”, but never make sure. Prov. 22:17-19; Jn. 5:39-47
Proverbs 22:17–19 Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, And apply your heart to my knowledge; For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; Let them all be fixed upon your lips, So that your trust may be in the Lord; I have instructed you today, even you.
John 5:39–47 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. “I do not receive honor from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
Some people hope they are “right”, but never verify it. Ezek. 33:30-32
Ezekiel 33:30–32 “As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doors of the houses; and they speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain. Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.
You may hope one day that you had been willing to know! Luke 16:27-31
Luke 16:27–31 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”
Being “right” involves an effort in study and understanding. Prov. 15:28; Luke 8:17-18

Luke 8:17–18 For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”
Being “right” invites hatred and envy. Amos 7:10-17; Matt. 27:18
Amos 7:10–17 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. For thus Amos has said: ‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword, And Israel shall surely be led away captive From their own land.’ ” Then Amaziah said to Amos: “Go, you seer! Flee to the land of Judah. There eat bread, And there prophesy. But never again prophesy at Bethel, For it is the king’s sanctuary, And it is the royal residence.” Then Amos answered, and said to Amaziah: “I was no prophet, Nor was I a son of a prophet, But I was a sheepbreeder And a tender of sycamore fruit. Pilate knew that Jesus had been delivered to him because of the envy of the Jews.
Matthew 27:18 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.
There is always the possibility that you are wrong!
Israel in their decadence thought trusting in Samaria was right. Amos 6:1-8
Amos 6:1–8 Woe to you who are at ease in Zion, And trust in Mount Samaria, Notable persons in the chief nation, To whom the house of Israel comes! Go over to Calneh and see; And from there go to Hamath the great; Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory? Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near; Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall; Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David; Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Therefore they shall now go captive as the first of the captives, And those who recline at banquets shall be removed. Babylon thought there was no way they could be wrong. Isaiah 47:8-9

Corinth puffed themselves up in their “rightness” when they were dead wrong. 1 Cor. 5:7-8
1 Corinthians 5:7–8 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
If you put your trust in the LORD, He will not disappoint you! Ps. 125; 131
Psalm 125 “A Song of Ascents. Those who trust in the Lord Are like Mount Zion, Which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, So the Lord surrounds His people From this time forth and forever. For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest On the land allotted to the righteous, Lest the righteous reach out their hands to iniquity. Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, And to those who are upright in their hearts. As for such as turn aside to their crooked ways, The Lord shall lead them away With the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel!”
Psalm 131 “Lord, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, hope in the Lord From this time forth and forever.”
Being “right” means you know the way to go.
Confidence in that God can make us righteous. Ps. 65; Acts 4:24-31

Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”
And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
Others will try to dissuade you from the right way. 2 Tim. 2:15-19
2 Timothy 2:15–19 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
Others will try to keep you from encouraging brethren on that right way. Matt. 23:13; Luke 11:52
Matthew 23:13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.
Luke 11:52 “Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.”
Milquetoast Christianity has the same results!

We will be free.
At the Alamo, Davy Crockett “went ahead” and stood for what he believed were the principles of freedom.
Regardless of how successful he was, many throughout history look upon this with admiration and appreciation.
In a greater sense, Jesus’ disciples stand for Him in times of ease and times of trouble. This makes us free, because it depends only on our relationship with Him. Jn. 8:31-36
John 8:31–36 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
We will be prepared for the coming of the LORD. Matt. 25:1-13; Acts 22:14-16

Acts 22:14–16 Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth. For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
We will help others prepare to meet God. Ezek. 33:7-11; 1 Thess. 5:1-11; Gal. 6:1-2
Ezekiel 33:7–11 “So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me. When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul. “Therefore you, O son of man, say to the house of Israel: ‘Thus you say, “If our transgressions and our sins lie upon us, and we pine away in them, how can we then live?” ’ Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’
1 Thessalonians 5:1–11 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. Galatians 6:1–2 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
In helping to prepare each other, we will hold our brethren accountable.
Peter did not delay in rebuking Simon's sin (a new convert, Acts 8:18-24). Jas. 5:19-20
He took the appropriate approach toward saving a brother from spiritual death.
He shows us how to balance our knowledge of the sinner's condition with our responsibility to help save him.
Jas. 5:19-20 “Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.”
Paul publicly withstood Peter. Gal. 2:11-14
Galatians 2:11-14 “Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, “If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews?”
Paul “went ahead” and corrected someone who - to the carnal mind - might be considered his superior.
Upon seeing the hypocrisy of Peter's conduct as well as its influence upon other Christians, he immediately and publicly opposed him.
Paul sets an example for us of balancing the needs of the sinner and those influenced by him with the personal discomfort of confronting the sinner.
Very few people enjoy confrontation. Paul did not (cf. 2 Cor. 2:1-4).
But, he understood that unless he acted at once (where truth and souls were at stake) both the gospel and the souls of men would suffer. Gal. 2:4-5
Gal. 2:4-5 “And this occurred because of false brethren secretly brought in (who came in by stealth to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage), to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.”
This is the approach we must instill within ourselves whenever acting to meet our responsibility toward those held in the clutches of sin and error.
Jeremiah was commissioned by God "to pluck up and to break down and to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant" Jer. 1:9-10
Jer. 1:9-10 “Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me: “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant.””
Four of the things he was told to do were "negative," destructive (pluck up, break down, destroy, overthrow). Only two were "positive" (build and plant).
Who told Jeremiah to do these things? God did!
We will patiently and consistently impress upon each other the need to glorify God. 1 Thess. 2:1-9
1 Thessalonians 2:1–9 For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not in vain. But even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict. For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit. But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts. For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak for covetousness—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us. For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.
